Considering that as long as there was a ball and something to hit it with; somebody was out there hitting it.
There are six professional baseball leagues dating back to the 1860's that are recognized by the Special Baseball Records committee, only two of which are still currently in operation.
The modern era of organized professional baseball came to fruition and is historically recognized with the formation of the National League in 1876. Although some baseball historians believe that the National Association of Professional Base Ball Players created in 1871 is the true foundation of the professional leagues of today.
It should be noted that to be considered as one of these six founding professional leagues, they had to maintain consistent playing records and have had significant impact on the major leagues.
The modern game we follow today consists of the American League (founded 1901) and the National League. Two separate professional baseball organizations that were merged in 1903 to create Major League Baseball.
Due to intense pre merger rivalries, the two leagues operated under the umbrella of Major League Baseball, but for many years couldn't be considered a cohesive organization.
Today we see The National League and American League playing as one professional organization. Although they remain separate leagues in theory, the rule variations are few and far between, and the teams now participate in inter league match ups.
